Autism Support for Young Adults Building Confidence, Connection & Purpose
Life after high school can look very different. Familiar routines change, friendships may shift, and young adults often have to find new ways to spend their time, connect with others, and become involved in their communities.
Unlocking Gems provides autism support for young adults who are navigating this important stage of life. Through meaningful activities, personal development, community experiences, and faith-centered encouragement, we help participants explore their interests, build confidence, and discover opportunities for connection and purpose.
Based in Chesapeake, VA, we serve autistic youth and young adults with lower support needs throughout Hampton Roads. Our program is designed to provide practical and personal support as participants move beyond high school and begin shaping their adult lives.
Beyond The School Years
Finding Support
After High School
Leaving high school can bring freedom and new opportunities, but it can also create an unexpected gap in structure and connection. A young adult may no longer have the same daily schedule, familiar classmates, school activities, or built-in opportunities to interact with others.
Finding appropriate autism support after high school can help make this transition easier to navigate. Young adults benefit from opportunities to develop interests, spend time in their communities, build relationships, and continue working toward personal goals.
At Unlocking Gems, we focus on what comes next. Our support gives participants opportunities to try new activities, build social confidence, develop practical skills, and become more comfortable participating in community life.
We understand that meaningful participation looks different for every person. Some young adults may enjoy group activities and meeting new people, while others may prefer smaller settings or activities connected to their individual interests.
Building Daily Confidence
Personal Growth Starts with Small Experiences
Confidence often develops through experience. Trying something new, participating in a group, speaking up about a preference, meeting someone new, or handling an unfamiliar situation can all provide opportunities for growth.
Our approach to faith based personal development combines encouragement with practical experiences. We help young adults recognize their strengths, explore their interests, and become more comfortable taking appropriate risks and trying new things.
Personal growth does not mean changing who someone is. It means giving them opportunities to understand themselves better, develop new abilities, and discover what they are capable of doing.
For some participants, progress may happen gradually. That is okay. We respect individual differences and focus on meaningful steps that fit the young adult rather than comparing them with others.
Faith & Purpose
Christian Autism Support
Rooted in Purpose
Faith is an important part of the Unlocking Gems community. Our Christian autism support is grounded in the belief that every young adult has value, unique strengths, and a God-given purpose.
We create space for faith to be part of personal growth and community connection while respecting each participant as an individual. Encouragement, compassion, service, fellowship, and purpose are woven into the way we support young adults.
As an autism ministry, Unlocking Gems seeks to create an environment where autistic young adults can feel welcomed, valued, and included. We want participants to know that their lives have meaning and that they have something valuable to contribute to their families, communities, and the world around them.
Individual Goals
Support That Starts
with the Person
Every participant brings a different personality, set of interests, strengths, and goals. Some may be eager to meet new people, while others may need time before feeling comfortable in a group. Some may already have strong interests they want to explore, while others may still be discovering what they enjoy.
Our autism support for young adults is personalized around these differences. We take time to understand what matters to each participant and use that understanding to guide meaningful opportunities for growth and community involvement.
The goal is not to make every young adult fit the same idea of independence or social success. It is to help each person develop confidence and find ways to participate in life that feel authentic to them.
